A good night. The supplements are out, photographed in the morning light before swallowing. Cold shower. Breathwork. Matcha, ceremonially prepared. By 8am, the day has been optimized into existence.

Don’t get me wrong, I do most of these things. Some of them genuinely help. And yes, I have taken the photo too.

What I want to talk about isn’t the routine. It’s what’s underneath it, the thing that turned a simple collection of practices into a statement about who we are, how we live, and how well we’re doing it. And preferably more seriously than you.

A culture worth looking at closely

The wellness landscape remains a fascinating territory. The way we obsess about health and longevity reflects something far deeper: our collective anxieties, our relationship with control, our idea of what it means to perform and live well. Optimization has become so normalized that opting out of it can start to feel like a lack of self-respect.

The trends are worth watching — after all, there’s a reason they go viral — and a lot of them are genuinely interesting. NAD+ metabolism, fascia research, the emerging science around nervous system regulation — there is real substance here, and it deserves serious attention.

The culture around these ideas is worth analyzing too. How fast a practice moves from clinical research to morning routine. And more often than we want to admit, how fast it skips that step entirely. How exhaustion became a status symbol and a market. The vocabulary of wellness content is now urgent, prescriptive and somehow competitive.

Somewhere along the way, wellness became the new luxury. Not just because it’s expensive, though it often is. Maybe because physical goods are so democratized now that status needed somewhere else to go, and found a home in the body, in discipline and in access. The kind of things only money and time can buy.

The performance question

Here comes the contradiction: the thing we used to turn to for relief from hustle culture, we rebuilt in its own image.

The rituals, the practices, even the supplements, were supposed to be the antidote. A space where a different logic applies, where we can reset and recharge. A space safe from constant effort and where the body isn’t a project to manage but a being to cherish. Where the point is to actually feel our best, not to document it. And yet the performance logic followed us in, like it always does.

Now we track everything: our rest, our sleep to the point we even grade it. From morning to evening, we optimize our day with the same intensity we bring to everything else. Have you ever noticed how the language of wellness borrowed from the language of productivity? Protocols, systems, biohacks… are we really the new KPIs to watch?

Yet, the most grounded approach to health is less visible, harder to package. That gap, between what optimization culture projects and what actually works, is exactly where this project lives.

What The Modern Reference is

I had my fair share of high-pressure environment before building this. What surprized me the most was how everyone seemed to be obsessed with their health, in the most unsustainable way. This experience not only gave me perspective but showed me how performance found a new playground — while staying completely out of the wellness conversation.

I built The Modern Reference because I wanted what I couldn’t find: a space where wellness was taken seriously without taking the industry at face value. I wanted a curated, opinionated and always curious space. Where different worlds could meet and blend.

Here, we explore the practices, the places, the objects, the science, framing another definition of living well. We also look at the culture itself: the ideas we find compelling, the rituals we suddenly adopt, and the obsessions that say as much about health as they do about the society that we live in.

This is also a space where aesthetics matter, because I believe, unapologetically, that what is good for the eye is good for the soul, and anything built with real attention has a legitimate place in the wellness conversation. Wellbeing is not only confined to the body, it extends into our surroundings — into what we decide is worth our attention. Beauty, here, is not just a decoration, it’s a form of care. It means alignment between how you live inside your body, inside your head and what you build around you. Between the surgical care you put into your sleep routine and the care you put into what you set your eyes on.

Here we explore wellness through a wider lens, always with rigor and honesty and with the genuine belief that living well is not always about doing more.

Welcome to The Modern Reference.

Wellness taken seriously, two pieces a week, no filler, no filter.
